Godloves Home Improvements works on homes across the City of Trenton. Our shop is right next door in Hamilton, and owner Charles Godlove has been doing this work since 2005. Trenton is New Jersey’s capital and Mercer County’s seat, and it’s one of the oldest cities in the state. Its houses reflect that.
Trenton’s Neighborhoods
Trenton packs about 90,000 people into roughly 8 square miles, so its neighborhoods are dense and close together. The city is divided into four wards:
- North Ward: North Trenton, the Battle Monument (Five Points) area and nearby streets
- South Ward: Chambersburg, Duck Island, Franklin Park and the Lamberton waterfront
- East Ward: the area around the Trenton Transit Center and East Trenton
- West Ward: the city’s more suburban side, including Hiltonia, Cadwalader Heights, Glen Afton, Hillcrest and the West End
We work in every ward. Downtown and older city blocks have tight lots, shared walls and limited parking. A good plan accounts for that from the first visit, from where materials go to how the house next door is protected.
Historic Districts and Older Homes
Trenton’s Landmarks Commission has designated 58 local landmarks, including 8 historic districts, such as Mill Hill and Berkeley Square. The Commission reviews exterior improvements to designated historic properties. If your house is in one of these districts, plan for that review before changing windows, doors, siding, porches or other exterior details.
Outside the districts, much of the city’s housing is still old. Trenton grew fast in the 1800s, and Greek Revival, Italianate, Second Empire and Queen Anne houses went up across the city. In homes this age, the hidden work is what counts: framing that has settled, plaster walls, old wiring and plumbing, and trim worth saving. We’ve worked on homes more than a century old, including some that needed Historical Society approval. We build beyond code minimums instead of just aiming to pass inspection.
City of Trenton or Trenton Mailing Address?
Many homes with a Trenton mailing address aren’t in the city. Parts of Hamilton, Ewing and Lawrence Township use Trenton ZIP codes too. That matters because permits go through the town your home is actually in. If your property taxes go to the City of Trenton, this is your page. If they go to Hamilton Township, see our Hamilton page. Either way, we serve you.
